In the digital era, utilities are bombarded with new technology solutions that promise to solve their challenges. Wading through the hype of these promises is difficult, but critical if utilities are going to be successful at delivering resilient systems for the future. This learning module provides case studies and examples of digital tools used throughout the utility to understand their systems.

At the conclusion of this learning module, participants will be able to

  • determine the importance of people, policy, and processes in implementing any digital tool;
  • list benefits of implementing digital solutions, including service delivery, workforce development enhancements, infrastructure reliability, operational efficiency, financial resiliency, regulatory compliance, and safety and security;
  • describe how a digital twin approach can help a utility adapt current operating procedures and incorporate resiliency into long-term capital improvements;
  • summarize how a digital twin serves as a mechanism to apply analysis of its system performance with simulated performances of future build-out scenarios to evaluate effectiveness and the overall future system’s success
  • explain how a web-based computerized operation and maintenance manual (COMM)
  • describe important elements of a COMM, including contents and organization, enhanced features, and interaction with the WRRF’s Computerized Maintenance Management System; and
  • recognize how digital tools are a valuable benefit to existing personnel at the water resource recovery facility, as well as a training resource for incoming personnel.
