It is scientific fact that the climate is changing, and always will. However, there is significant discussion on man’s impacts on climate and ways to adapt to the changes. The water sector plays a vital role in this debate, as seen by the focus of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, where water plays a part in all 17 goals. This short course is designed to give those new to the issue of climate change a firm foundation, as well as keep those more aware of the issues up to speed on the latest developments, research, and ways we can make an impact on this key topic.

At the end of this short course, participants will be able to

  • describe potential impacts of climate change on the water sector and possible mitigation measures;
  • summarize findings on greenhouse gas emissions from the water sector, including vulnerabilities and opportunities;
  • respond to changing precipitation patterns using the latest tools and innovations;
  • describe water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) initiatives, keys to success, and their application in both developed and developing communities;
  • explain the importance of water to the UN Sustainable Development Goals; and
  • identify ways the water sector can implement the SDGs while meeting other goals such as nutrient limits.
