The pandemic has reminded the water sector of facts that we have known for a long time, particularly the key role of water in our communities. Public health is one of the foundations of the sector. The short course provides a clear and up to date picture on many issues relevant to today and tomorrow. The lessons from the last year are being applied to other key public health concerns. This short course includes many leaders from different parts of the sector, each providing insights and key lessons that will help the sector continue to keep the public safe.

At the end of this short course, participants will be able to

  • discuss insights into monitoring wastewater for indicators of infectious diseases such as SARS-CoV-2;
  • explain and discuss the significance of leadership strategies to respond to and plan for large and sudden issues such as the pandemic;
  • recognize how to best protect workers and the public health in the face of emerging infectious diseases;
  • list the current state of the knowledge on microplastics; and
  • identify future direction for research on emerging public health concerns.
