Optimal operation of water reuse systems requires timely and informed decision making in response to fluctuating operational conditions. Advanced process models can be used as day-to-day tools to develop reliable operational strategies. This learning module explores various models and applications to industrial facilities.

At the conclusion of this learning module, participants will be able to

  • describe a clarifier process simulator for the analysis of the thickening of oil solids from produced water;
  • give examples from the study that analyzed sensitivity to controllable process conditions and evaluated technology options for external cooling sources, including estimation of required cooling load to maintain acceptable summertime temperatures;
  • discuss the development and implementation of a physicochemical model for optimizing operations of industrial facilities, including the application for simulating advanced processes including pH (acid/base systems), precipitation, oxidation, adsorption, biofiltration, carbonation, chlorination, etc.

This learning module is also available as a part of the Industrial Water Management and Reuse short course.
