This session focuses on mainstream deammonification via PdN-AnAOB pathway, identified as a more suitable choice due to its ease and reliability over a broad range of conditions and carbon sources. At the end of this learning module, participants will

  • be able to give examples of strategies for full scale implementation from pilot demonstrations such as Blue Plains WRRF; describe operational cost savings possible as shown in the case studies; explain the impact of phosphorus limitation on the performance
  • of PdNA filters; summarize example nitrogen polishing options, including partial denitrification with limited external carbon addition coupled with anammox; describe the potential of pre-anoxic partial denitrification and challenges of fermentate composition
  • in practice, including how design of the PdNA zones to operate at high nitrate removal rates can potentially help to maintain good PdN selection and thus PdNA rates for more complex carbon sources; compare startup time across PDNA moving bed biofilm reactors
  • (MBBRs); and give an example of results from models of biological denitrification reactions that were modified to allow for partial denitrification (or denitratation) when volatile fatty acids are used as a carbon source.
