Let’s make the next top model!  Not in the fashion world, but in the use of models applied to issues in the collection and stormwater systems. This learning module  will explore the advances in collection system modeling from calibration standards, to how much detail do we need to include, and the practical ways utilities are using models to make decisions.

At the conclusion of this learning module, participants will be able to

  • explain how a hydraulic model can be applied to rapid changes in an urban setting, including evaluating impacts of different redevelopment types and land use changes;
  • describe application of hydraulic modeling to determine system capacity management decisions and to assess sewer rehabilitation needs;
  • outline the benefits of combining a stormwater model with data from flow meters and gauge adjusted radar rainfall;
  • identify how sewer overcleaning reduces overflows, but can also create some unintended consequences related to asset lifespans, worker safety, and other workforce issues;
  • list solutions to optimize sewer cleaning using remote site monitors, Cloud-based software, predictive analytics, and machine learning; and
  • describe the engineering profession of Hydraulic Modeling and recognize key skills related to the field of computational hydraulics.
